Grose, Francis. The Antiquities of England and Wales: Being a Collection of Views of the Most Remarkable Ruins and Ancient Buildings Etc Etc. London: S. Hooper, 1772. First Edition. Folio. Full Calf. Good+. Six volumes complete, 1772-1777 – Volume One – , ii, 82pp, ; Volume Two – ; Volume Three – ; Volume Four – , 10pp, ; Volume Five (first supplement volume) – , iv, , 4pp and Volume Six (second supplement volume) – , 38pp, [13 plates], pp33-36, 4pp, 8pp.
Contemporary full calf, raised bands with spines in six panels, leather title label to second panel, contrasting volume label to third. Rubbed, some scuffing and bumping to extremities, a few minor scrapes to leather, with a couple of minor splits to joints, but all holding well. Internally occasional light foxing, browning and off-setting, especially to the first volume, but generally fairly bright and clean. Previous owner’s armorial book plate to front pastedowns (Vane Londonderry).
Most of the plates and vignettes in the first volume are hand-coloured. County maps and large folding map of England and Wales are hand-coloured in outline.
Bibliographically difficult, lacks four county maps (as to index – Hertfordshire, Somersetshire, Staffordshire and Westmoreland), but does have Northumberland (not listed). Probably lacks some other plans, plates or text, but has others not listed. The index is unreliable, with several plates listed twice under different titles, a proper collation has not been found and is offered as is.
