[Banfield, John]. A Guide to Ilfracombe and the Neighbourhood; Comprehending a General Sketch of the History and Objects Most Worthy of Remark. Ilfracombe: J. Banfield, Reprint. 16mo. Hardback. Good. , ii-iv, 58pp, original blind stamped cloth, title in gilt to centre of upper cover, primrose endpapers, n.d.
Spine and edges faded, small ink spot to upper cover, pencilled note about the population to first page of text, frontispiece with light water staining to edges, previous owners name to head of title in pencil, otherwise internally fairly bright and clean.
A previous owner had pencilled 1842 as the date on the title page, but this is too early as the text mentions mines closing in 1848, the population number is taken from the census of 1841, so it was probably published between 1848 and 1851 (the next census date).
With an engraved frontispiece by T. Martin of Rock & Co. and a folding plan of Ilfracombe, showing the location of Banfield’s Library and Reading Rooms.
