Description

[003477] Marino, Giambattista; T.R. (Trans.). The Slaughter of the Innocents By Herod. London: Andrew Clark for Samuel Mearne, 1675. First Edition. 16mo. Full Morocco. Good. [4], 132pp, late nineteenth century or early twentieth century full morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, remaining panels with central flower tool and volute corner pieces, covers with uneven triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, floral patterned endpapers, probably Italian, but nothing similar in Kopylov’s Dominotes Italiens, a.e.g.

Rubbed to extremities, otherwise quite attractive externally. Lightly browned throughout, occasionally slightly heavier with a few small light stains, text trimmed to head throughout, occasionally quite tightly to running title.

Lacking *1 and *2, (the translators dedicatory epistle signed T.R.), lacking the errata leaf (I4), which has been cut down with partial loss of text, and stuck to the foot of page 132, obscuring text (other errata?) beneath. The engraved frontispiece has been laid down with some loss to margins with a closed tear from foot to near the head, through the image but without loss, the title has been laid down with some loss to imprint which has been replaced in ink in an old hand. Notes in ink about the book to endpapers and reverse of title. Previous owners armorial bookplate to reverse of front patterned endpaper (James Maidment), and small ink stamp of the Selbourne library to reverse of title.
