Two volumes complete – Volume One – xvi, 400pp and Volume Two – iv, 88pp, iii-xliv, 89-272pp. Contemporary calf covers with later reback, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, volume number lettered direct in gilt to third, remaining panels with central lozenge shaped tool in gilt, covers with gilt double fillet border.
Spines slightly faded, one or two small minor repairs to covers. Browning to edges of endpapers, one or two minor spots of foxing, small tear to bottom margin of R8, otherwise fairly bright and clean. With previous owners (Walter Parker, Baronet of Ratton) armorial book plate to front pastedowns. With two folding engraved plates.
This is the second edition corrected (effectively the third edition after the first of 1723 and the 1726 second). The essays ‘Some Account of the Revolution‘ and ‘A Feast of the Gods‘ are present here in the second volume (bound after page 88, iii-xliv); the ‘A Character of John Sheffield‘ sometimes found, but not an integral part of the work (ESTC) is not present here.
