Internally lightly browned, a few page corners turned, a few pen trials and mathematics to a few of the blank pages and lower pastedown, several pages excised or partly excised. With the name Theophilus Clements and the date of March 8th 1815 to upper cover, and another name and later (1857) date to front pastedown
A collection of various recipes, receipts and medical receipts, predominantly in the same hand, but with others as well. The receipts include ‘To clean brass and copper’, ‘To take rust from iron’, ‘Blacking’, and ‘To Distroy (sic) Mice and Rats’
The recipes are mainly for cakes and wine, including ‘Raspberry Vinegar’, ‘Calf’s Foot Jelly’, ‘Black Currant Wine’, ‘To Preserve Cucumbers’, ‘Ginger Cakes, ‘Shrewsbury Cakes’, ‘Blancmanges’, ‘Arrow Root Pudding’, ‘Ginger Wine’, ‘Orange Wine’, ‘Rich Plumb (sic) Cake’, ‘Apple, Potatoe (sic), and Lemon Cheesecakes’, ‘Bread Without Yeast’, ‘To Preserve Rhubarb’, ‘Currant, Gooseberry, and Raspberry Wine’, and ‘A Very Good Cake’
The medical receipts include a remedy for ‘Weakness and Decline’, ‘Bitters for a Weak Stomach’, ‘Receipt for the Dropsy’, ‘For a Cough’, ‘Chilblains’, ‘A Cure for Boils’, ‘For a Sprain’, ‘Excellent Pills for a Headache’, ‘Cure for Piles’, ‘Remedy for Rheumatism, Lumbago’, ‘Whooping Cough’, a ‘Cure for Cholera’, and an ‘Ointment for Cancer’, which involves the green leaves of broad beans
