Two documents relating to the Alnwick militia. The first is approximately 205mm x 255mm in size, the second is approximately 225mm x 190mm in size
First named is browned and slightly chipped (fair only), the second is lightly foxed
The first, dated 25th of January 1817, is the ballot paper, notifying Robert Finlay of Alnwick, that he has been chosen by lot to serve in the militia for a period of five years
The second is a ‘substitution’ form, dated the 22nd of February 1817, stating that Robert Finlay has provided a substitute, namely John Gibson of Newcastle, a blacksmith, to serve in the militia in his stead
