[000014] Justini (Justinus); Graevii, J.G. (Ed) Historiae Phillippicae. Van Gouwen, G., Henricum Westenium, Amstelaedami (Amsterdam), 1690. Reprint. Good+. Full Calf, 8vo. One volume in two – Volume One – [68], 380pp and Volume Two – 381-656pp, [120].
Later (late-eighteenth century) full-calf, raised bands, spines in six panels, contrasting title / volume labels to second and third panels, volute corner pieces and central lozenge shaped tool to remaining panels, gilt flower head frame to covers, all edges marbled with blue paste endpapers
Rubbed to extremities, slight loss to head of spine of volume one. Internally some light soiling to a couple of the index pages in volume two but not affecting sense, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Previous owner’s name to title and first page of volume two. Additional engraved title by Van Gouwen, with letterpress in red and black. A reprint of the first Graevii edition of 1688, but with all the important notes
Dibdin notes (of the earlier Graevii edition) that “these editions, containing all the variorum notes and those of Graevius, are much superior … Graevius … corrected the errors of Bongarsius, and formed the text of Justin by sober critical rules. The last four editions are preferable, as they contain the notes of Faber, Vorstius and Scheffer” (Dibdin II:139). The aforementioned notes are all included in this variorum edition
