Description
[003690] [Political Dictionary] The Politician’s Dictionary; Or, a Summary of Political Knowledge. London: Geo. Allen, 1775. First Edition. 8vo. Hardback. Fair. Two volumes complete – Volume One – [v], vi-viii, [1], 2-430pp and Volume Two – [5], 2-72, 79-102, 97-384pp, [8] (register correct despite pagination). Original boards
Back strips largely defective and some stitching broken, bindings holding, though a little weak especially volume one, covers worn and grubby. Internally lightly browned throughout, volume one has light staining to bottom margin, occasionally heavier and rising to catch text and gutter margins, but with no loss of sense, U1 has loss to top corner, but no loss of text. Volume two with some light staining to bottom margin. Labels of the ‘Financial History of the American Revolution’ collection to lower pastedowns
Despite a few problems, in original condition, untrimmed and unpressed
A mixture of articles, including Alexander the Great, Banks, Colonies (including North America), Commerce, Jamaica, Latitude, Monarchy, Population, Taxes and Trade. Perhaps most interestingly it also includes a long (pages 227-261) section in the second volume about the “Southern Continent, called also Terra Australis Incognita. Under these names is generally comprized the various continents, islands, and countries, which are supposed to exist in the southern part of the pacific ocean; parts of which are known imperfectly, and parts conjectured” (page 227)
A relatively uncommon work, with five locations in the UK in ESTC and thirteen in the US, with a further three in Australia. Higgs 6395; Kress 7154
