Small amount of loss to the earlier dated, but with no loss of text, pencil numbers to the reverse of the same slip, both lightly worn, with some evidence of being removed from an album
The first slip notifies the landlord ‘at the sign of the Cross’, in Narrowgate, Alnwick, that he is to find quarters for two men of the North Light Infantry Regiment of militia for two months, from the 15th of March 1875; the second is for the same landlord, and is for two men and two horses from the 1st Regiment of Dragoons, for one night, dated the 16th of June 1875
An extract from the Mutiny Act, printed beneath, notes that the innholder is required to supply “one hot meal in each day, to consist of (but not exceeding) one pound and a quarter of meat … one pound of bread, one pound of potatoes, or other vegetables, and two pints of small beer, and vinegar, salt, and pepper, for which the sum of ten pence will be paid, and two pence halfpenny for a bed”
