The title is taken from the psychologist Robert M. Lindner’s 1944 book, Rebel Without a Cause: The Hypnoanalysis of a Criminal Psychopath, though the film itself does not make any other references to Lindner’s book

Directed by Nicholas Ray, and starring James Dean and Natalie Wood, it was released about a month after Dean’s death in a car accident
