The Spa Fields meetings had been organised by followers of Thomas Spence, the first in November 1816 had passed off peacefully, the second in December of 1816, had developed into a ineffectual attempt at a revolution, with several Spenceans raiding a gunsmiths and briefly exchanging gunfire with some soldiers. After this John Hooper, Thomas Preston, Arthur Thistlewood (later hanged for his part in the Cato Street Plot), and James Watson, were arrested and charged with high treason, though later released. The final part deals with the arrest of several Spenceans after the second meeting, including Watson, Preston, and both Thomas Evans and his son
