Dated the 23rd of October, 1646, a warrant from the Mayor and Justices of Stafford to Francis Mosse, John Ranshewe, serjeants at mace; Thomas Hawkenes, constable; and all others concerned, to demand from all persons named in an assessment “toardes the necessary reliefe of the poore’ the sums due; and if any refuse, levy the sum by distress ‘& sale of the offenders goods’ (returning them any surplus), or, if there is nothing to distrain, to put the offenders into custody
