Description

[004759] Wragg, Arthur; Housman, Laurence (Introduction) Seven Words. ill. Wragg, Arthur. London: William Heinemann, 1939. First Edition. 4to (Oblong). Unbound. Good. [6], 9-16pp, plates

Small amounts of staining from a rusty paper clip to text and sample plates titles, otherwise fairly bright

The unbound and untrimmed sheets, a proof copy with annotations by Wragg and others, and two sets of the plates, but without the half title, pages 17-20, and titles of plates one, two, and three; probably as sent, with a note explaining that “title pages to plates I, II, and III not available at the moment: but am sending this to avoid delay in correcting the rest of text”

With a few corrections and additions, including the addition of the dedication to Dick Sheppard, presumably in Wragg’s hand

The pictures illustrate Jesus’s cries from the cross, and “show a new departure in Wragg’s art away from the realistic and towards the surreal” (Brook, Arthur Wragg, page 89)
